K Annamalai is a former IPS officer who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020 and became the president of its Tamil Nadu unit in 2021. He is widely regarded as a dynamic and charismatic leader who has a vision for the development of the state and the nation. In this essay, I will briefly introduce his background, his achievements as a police officer, his entry into politics, and his role as the BJP’s state chief.
K Annamalai was born on 4 June 1984 in Karur district of Tamil Nadu. His father, Kuppusamy, is a farmer and his mother, Parameshwari, is a homemaker. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering from PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore and his PGDM from Indian Institute of Management in Lucknow. He was an active student leader and participated in various extracurricular activities. He also had a keen interest in social service and entrepreneurship.
In 2011, he joined the Indian Police Service and was allotted the Karnataka cadre. He served as the Assistant Superintendent of Police of Karkala, the Superintendent of Police of Udupi and Chikmagalur, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police of South Bangalore. He earned the reputation of being a tough and honest officer who took stern action against criminals, communal elements, and corrupt officials. He also initiated several welfare schemes for the police personnel and the public. He was popularly known as the ‘Singham’ of Karnataka for his fearless attitude and daring operations.
In 2019, he resigned from the IPS after serving for eight years. He said that he wanted to pursue his passion for public service and nation-building in a different way. He also expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his vision for a new India. In 2020, he joined the BJP and was appointed as one of the vice-presidents of its Tamil Nadu unit. He said that he was impressed by the party’s ideology, discipline, and organizational structure.
In 2021, he contested the Tamil Nadu assembly elections from Aravakurichi constituency in Karur district. He faced a tough challenge from the DMK candidate who had a strong Muslim vote bank. He campaigned vigorously and reached out to all sections of the society. He promised to provide houses for the poor, jobs for the youth, infrastructure for the farmers, and development for the region. He also highlighted the achievements of the Modi government at the centre and the failures of the DMK-Congress alliance in the state. He secured around 68,550 votes but lost by a margin of about 25,000 votes.
Despite his defeat, he did not lose hope or enthusiasm. He continued to work for the party and the people. In July 2021, he was appointed as the president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit by the party’s national leadership. He succeeded L Murugan who was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers as a minister of state. He became one of the youngest state presidents of the BJP in the country.
As the state chief, he has a huge responsibility to strengthen the party’s base and expand its reach in Tamil Nadu. The state has been dominated by regional parties like DMK and AIADMK for decades and has been resistant to national parties like BJP and Congress. The BJP has only four MLAs in the 234-member assembly and has not won any Lok Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu since 1999.
However, K Annamalai is confident that he can change this scenario with his hard work and dedication. He has a clear strategy to increase the party’s membership, mobilize its workers, connect with its allies, communicate with its voters, and counter its opponents. He has also set an ambitious target to win at least 60 seats in the next assembly elections in 2026.
He believes that Tamil Nadu needs a change from the corrupt and dynastic politics of DMK and AIADMK to the clean and democratic politics of BJP. He also believes that Tamil Nadu needs to be integrated with the national mainstream and benefit from the development schemes and policies of the Modi government. He says that he will work for the welfare of all sections of society, especially the farmers, women, youth, dalits, tribals, minorities, and backward classes.
He also says that he will uphold the cultural values and traditions of Tamil Nadu while respecting its diversity and pluralism. He says that he will promote Tamil language, literature, art, music, cinema, cuisine, and heritage while fostering national unity and integrity. He says that he will follow the principles of ‘Antyodaya’ (welfare of the last person) and ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas’ (together with all, development for all, trust of all).
K Annamalai is a leader who has a blend of courage, competence, and charisma. He has a track record of excellence and integrity. He has a vision of progress and prosperity. He has a mission of service and sacrifice. He is a role model for the youth and a hope for the future. He is the new face of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. He is the new voice of the people of Tamil Nadu. He is the new leader of Tamil Nadu.
