Satya Pal Malik

Governor Satya Pal Malik is a veteran politician who has served in various capacities in different political parties and states. He is currently the Governor of Meghalaya, a post he assumed in August 2020 after being transferred from Goa. Before that, he was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, where he oversaw the controversial revocation of the state’s special status and its bifurcation into two union territories in 2019. He was also the Governor of Bihar from 2017 to 2018 and the interim Governor of Odisha for two months in 201812

Malik has been a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he accuses of being authoritarian, communal, and corrupt. He has often made public statements that have embarrassed or contradicted the Modi government, especially on the issues of Jammu and Kashmir, farmers’ protests, and Covid-19 management. He has also expressed his support for the opposition parties and their efforts to form a united front against Modi in the upcoming general elections in 202434

Malik’s hatred for Modi can be traced back to his political career, which has seen him switch allegiances from one party to another several times. He started as a student leader of the socialist Lok Dal in the 1970s and became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1974. He then joined the Congress party in 1984 and became a Rajya Sabha MP, but resigned in 1987 after the Bofors scam. He later joined the Janata Dal and became a Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh in 1989. He lost the election in 1996 as a Samajwadi Party candidate and joined the BJP in 2004. He became the General Secretary (Organisation) of the BJP and was considered close to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, he fell out with Modi after the latter became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and sidelined him from the party affairs. He quit the BJP in 2009 and rejoined it in 2013, only to be appointed as a governor by Modi in 201756

Malik has never hidden his resentment towards Modi and his style of governance, which he considers dictatorial and divisive. He has accused Modi of centralising power, undermining democracy, suppressing dissent, violating human rights, polarising society along religious lines, mishandling the economy, failing to protect farmers’ interests, ignoring the Covid-19 crisis, and damaging India’s image abroad. He has also claimed that he was offered bribes by Modi’s associates to clear files related to corruption cases in Jammu and Kashmir, which he refused. He has challenged Modi to face him in a debate on any issue and said that he would expose his lies and misdeeds7

Malik has also praised Modi’s rivals and opponents, such as Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Nitish Kumar, and others. He has called them honest, capable, secular, and democratic leaders who can provide a better alternative to Modi’s rule. He has urged them to unite under a common platform and fight against Modi’s tyranny in the next elections. He has also expressed his willingness to join their alliance if they invite him.

In conclusion, Governor Satya Pal Malik is a seasoned politician who has a long history of animosity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has criticized Modi’s policies and actions on various occasions and supported his adversaries. He has also shown his interest in joining the opposition alliance against Modi in the future. His hatred for Modi stems from his personal and political differences with him over the years.
